Jamie Walker’s brace helped the Blues return to winning ways as they beat Gresley Rovers 5-1 at the Moat Ground on Saturday afternoon.

Two headed goals from Jamie Walker and Romaine Graham gave the Blues an early lead. Then, Alex Marshall extended that lead late in the first half, just before Daniel Munday scored what turned out to be the Moatmen’s only goal.

Kieran Walker fired the Blues even further ahead midway through the second half, and Jamie Walker claimed his brace to round off proceedings.

Ian Deakin made two changes to the side that exited the Emirates FA Cup on Tuesday. Paolo Piliero replaced Ryan Head in right back, and Mitchell Robinson made his first start of the season, after serving his five-match suspension, dropping Jude Brittain down to the bench.

The Blues came out firing and opened the scoring only two minutes into the match. Kieran Walker’s long throw-in looked to be flicked on inside the box by Graham, although it crept through the entire defence and nestled into the far corner.

Graham could have grabbed his second minutes later when Jamie Walker’s inswinging corner was initially flicked on by Brad Wilson onto the captain’s head, although the ball ended up bouncing off the wrong side of the crossbar.

Jamie Walker doubled Long Eaton’s lead in the 22nd minute – after Robinson’s dinked cross was diverted by the forward with a neat glancing header into the bottom right corner.

Five minutes later, the Blues made it three. Another Kieran Walker throw was flicked on by Brad Wilson onto the feet of Danny Gordon, who was then allowed to play an inch-perfect pass through to Marshall for a close-range strike past Joe Fryatt.

The hosts earned a first-half consolation 10 minutes before half-time when Lucas Harrison’s free-kick was guided in off the far post by the head of Munday.

Long Eaton started the second half with the same intensity and pressure they did in the first, and it took only 15 minutes for the Blues to make it four.

Graham displayed some brilliant determination to retrieve the ball on the edge of the Gresley box, he then turned and found Marshall out on the left; the forward was able to lift a cross into the box for Jamie Walker to divert back across goal and allow Kieran Walker to simply smash into the back of the net.

Dealing with Kieran Walker’s trademark long throw-in turned out to be the Moatmen’s biggest drawback throughout the match, as another one was launched into the box midway through the second half, and after some pinball inside the box, Graham was the one looking to convert, but this time it was saved and distributed comfortably by Fryatt.

The Blues scored their fifth and final goal in the 71st minute - after James Taylor’s dinked cross missed Marshall at the front post but found Jamie Walker at the far post for a thumping volley that flew past Fryatt who was rooted to the spot.

Deakin, Craig Swinscoe, and Adam Campbell have now helped guide Long Eaton to three wins in three matches so far in the Midland Football League 2020/21 season.
