LEAGUE LEADERS DELIVER LATEST BLOW TO BLUES

BLUES 1 DOUGHBOYS 4

REPORT BY DAN BISHOP

Long Eaton United were left to reflect on a harsh 4–1 defeat against runaway league leaders Wellingborough Town after a performance which deserved considerably more reward at Grange Park.

The Blues created plenty of opportunities and competed strongly for long periods, but were punished by a clinical visiting side who demonstrated exactly why they sit clear at the top of the division.

Long Eaton made a bright start and almost opened the scoring after only five minutes. Riley McLachlan beat the offside trap to race onto James Taylor’s through ball, but after breaking clear he dragged his effort wide.
Jayden Cotterill then overlapped before cutting the ball back to Taylor, who found Connor Pace, but the midfielder could only pull his shot wide after creating space.

Wellingborough carried a threat of their own from set-pieces and Lewis King was forced into an excellent low save after 14 minutes when Lloyd Buckby met a corner with a diving header.
Another Buckby delivery was headed across goal by visiting captain Jack O’Connor, narrowly beyond the lurking Zayn Hakeem, before Taylor released McLachlan at the opposite end, the winger firing just wide from the edge of the area.

The visitors broke the deadlock ten minutes before half-time. Sam Warburton curled a corner into the area and O’Connor rose highest to power a header underneath the crossbar.
Long Eaton immediately looked for a response. Taylor was brought down on the edge of the penalty area and McLachlan sent the resulting free-kick over, before another McLachlan delivery led to Taylor and goalkeeper Dean Snedker colliding at the far post, with the visiting stopper doing enough to keep the ball out.

Wellingborough almost doubled their advantage within a minute of the restart when George Ball found himself free inside the penalty area, but King produced an excellent one-handed save to turn his effort behind.
The Blues responded positively and their pressure finally brought a deserved equaliser on 56 minutes.
McLachlan’s cross was headed back across the area by Gianluca Bucci and Pace saw his first effort deflected behind. From the resulting corner, Long Eaton appealed unsuccessfully for a push on Jamie Hanson, but the loose ball instead ran to Pace, who crashed a superb strike home from just outside the penalty area.

Parity lasted barely two minutes.

Lloyd Buckby collected possession and unleashed a stunning effort into the top corner which left King with no chance and restored Wellingborough’s lead.
King then denied Draper moments later, palming away at his near post from an acute angle, but the league leaders struck for a third after 62 minutes. Warburton delivered into the box and substitute Neo Richard-Noel headed against the crossbar, with O’Connor reacting quickest to turn the rebound beyond the grounded King.

It was a punishing spell for Long Eaton, who had gone from drawing level to trailing by two goals in the space of six minutes.
They refused to fold.
Cotterill almost caught Snedker out with a cross-shot from wide before McLachlan’s follow-up was blocked, while further pressure resulted in a succession of corners.

There was also a welcome sight on 71 minutes as Evan Garnett replaced Alex Howes, marking the forward’s long-awaited return from injury.
Hanson produced an important challenge to prevent Richard-Noel reaching another dangerous Warburton cross before Taylor delivered an excellent ball into the Wellingborough area, Davidson-Miller rising above his marker but unable to make the required contact.
Snedker then made a low save to deny McLachlan, while Pace continued his energetic display by starting a move inside the Wellingborough half and racing forward to meet Taylor’s low cross, only to fire over.

The visitors eventually added a flattering fourth six minutes from time.
After Hanson had dealt well with Richard-Noel from a long ball forward, Wellingborough quickly attacked again and former Long Eaton man and Antigua and Barbuda international Zayn Hakeem got the better of Cotterill inside the area before calmly slotting past King.
Long Eaton continued to push until the end. Callum Cocks rattled the top of the crossbar with a vicious free-kick three minutes from time and then sent a speculative long-range effort narrowly wide during stoppage time.

The final scoreline suggested a far more comfortable evening for Wellingborough than had actually been the case.
Long Eaton created numerous opportunities against the division’s outstanding side and matched the leaders for significant periods, but Wellingborough’s ruthless finishing proved the decisive difference.
Despite the result, there were plenty of positives for the Blues to take forward as they prepare for another home fixture against St Ives Town on Saturday.
