What was arguably our longest away trip of the season was certainly worth the trip for our away fans as they watched us put three past the Saints, receiving two red cards, and a few yellows.
Our win over the Cambridgeshire side saw us rise to fifth in the league.
Brad Munn made a number of changes to the team that drew 1-1 against Rugby Borough on Wednesday.
Lewis King began in goal whilst commanding a backline containing Betts (RB), Jayden Cotterill (RCB), Gianluca Bucci (LCB), and Jake Finnerty (LB).
Cieron Keane (CM), Coden Duncan (CM), and Connor Pace (CAM) began as a midfield three.
Tristan Thompson-Matthews (LW) was pushed out wide with Davidson-Miller (RW) on the opposite flank, and Evan Garnett (ST) being the central striker.
The action was instant with both sides creating good chances within minutes of the whistle blowing.
Garnett was booked in the 14th minute for what the referee decided was simulation inside the box.
We had the most joy down the Saints left flank as Finnerty had plenty of space to roam and create chances.
In the 17th minute, we broke the deadlock. Following a great move down the hosts left side, Tristan played the ball across to Betts who was arriving into the box. He thundered it home leaving the goalkeeper no chance.
The hosts tried to respond quickly to the setback but were unsuccessful as they were thwarted by King numerous times.
We came close to grabbing our second goal earlier than what we did as the Saints cleared Tristan’s attempt off the line.
The first half continued to be action packed as in the 26th minute, both sides had a great chance to score a goal, but neither side could finish their chance. The hosts were through on goal, but King stood tall and denied their chipped effort. Jahvan found himself through on goal following the save, he was 1v1 with the goalkeeper, but he placed the ball wide.
Three minutes after the half hour mark, we doubled our lead. Betts played a great ball into the box for Evan to put it into the net, but a Saints defender got to the ball first and bundled it into the goal.
Just a minute later, Evan almost got the goal he deserved as he had a shot at the front post saved well by the goalkeeper.
Three minutes after we scored our second, St. Neots’ Amaeshike was played through on our goal, he did well to round King and slot it into the empty net.
The referee sounded the whistle ending the first half, but the action didn’t end there as all the players huddled around the centre circle trying to break up a scuffle. The referee managed to finally to break it up and decided to hand Bucci and St. Neots’ Clukin both red cards.
Following the red card, Munn decided to replace Finnerty with Jamie Hanson, meaning Keane took up the left back position.
The hosts almost equalised two minutes after the restart as Amaeshike was at the back post unmarked, but his effort flew over the bar.
On the stroke of the hour mark, we had our third. A good ball into the box by Keane was met well at the back post by Jahvan as he chested it into the goal.
On the 65th minute, Hanson was red carded, we were reduced to nine men. St. Neots’ Amaeshike was through on goal, but Hanson tripped him, but the player did not fall and managed to get a shot away. The referee pulled it back and awarded a red card for the challenge.
Following the foul, the hosts freekick was on target, but King did well to get across and save the effort. However, he injured himself in the process and needed medical treatment. He continued the game.
With 20 minutes left, James Taylor replaced Jahvan.
In the 74th minute, the hosts scored their second goal of the day. It was a good effort at the back post that beat King at his near post.
Following the goal, Duncan went down injured and was taken off for George Atwal.
Just two minutes later, we were let off the hook. A ball into the box was misjudged by King and all St. Neots had to do was get a touch on the ball and guide it towards the goal, but instead they missed the ball, and it went out for a goal kick.
Nerves were high as the game did not have long left.
Keane was yellow carded in the 88th minute for kicking the ball away.
Cotterill made a huge block in the first minute of injury time.
In the fifth minute, Taylor was booked for a bad challenge.
The whistle blew full-time. We held on well.
Our next game is against AFC Rushden & Diamonds on Saturday 27th.
