Long Eaton United 0-1 Corby Town

Corby Town returned home with all three points after a gritty league opener at the Family Only Stadium.

We suffered defeat in our league opener as Corby Town’s Gary Stohrer scored the only goal of the game in the 68th minute.

Brad Munn named a slightly changed side to the one that beat Sporting Khalsa 5-1 in our last pre-season match.

Lewis King donned the armband and took his position in goal.

Owen Betts began in his right back position with our new signing Jake Finnerty on the opposite flank.

Jayden Cotterill and Gianluca Bucci were our starting centre backs.

Connor Pace, James Taylor and Tristan Thompson-Matthews were our midfield three.

Jahvan Davidson-Miller and Dexter Walters began as the wingers with Evan Garnett starting as striker.

Our new singing George Atwal, James Shaw, Corey Gregory, Caleb Horsley, and Aaron Cole took up positions on the bench.

The game started fast as we had a golden chance in the fifth minute fly over the bar. A ball into the box was not dealt with well by the Corby defenders, and Thompson-Matthews ran onto the ball looking like it was a definite goal. However, he went for power over placement.

We continued to apply heavy pressure on their goal, but we could not find that finishing touch.

Bucci received the first card of the game in the 32nd minute after a challenge on the halfway line.

A minute later Corby found themselves through on goal with just King to beat, but Betts made a great run back and foiled their move with a good tackle.

King made a huge save in the 39th minute denying Corby the chance to take the lead.

Just before the halftime break, we had another golden chance to take the lead. A free kick gave us a dangerous position. Pace crossed the ball and found Bucci at the back post, he connected well, but the header was too much as it went over the bar.

The second half brought about more of the same as we hit the bar in the 49th minute.

Bucci and King combined in efforts to deny Corby the lead as in the 56th minute they were through. But Bucci tracked back well and put the striker off well enough, helping King to make the save.

Walters was replaced by Shaw on the hour mark.

The visitors took the lead in the 68th minute. Stohrer out muscled Bucci, rounded King and slotted it into the net.

Atwal replaced Davidson-Miller in the 72nd minute.

The only action the final 10 minutes saw were two bookings as Thompson-Matthews and Taylor were booked for challenges in the Corby half.

The final whistle went, and it was ultimately a disappointing result, but there were positives to take from the game.

We will take them positives into our next game against Mickleover on August 12 as we travel away from home.
