Both halves were a complete contrast to the other.
The two sides went into the half-time break all tied at 0-0, however the Blues came out of the blocks rapidly and went on to put five past Jonathan Brown in the Boldmere St Michaels goal.
James Shaw opened the scoring in the 49th minute before tapping home his second just two minutes later.
Evan Garnett added a third in the 67th minute and Shaw had his hat-trick a minute after to put Brad Munn’s side 4-0 up.
James Taylor sealed all three points for Long Eaton United in the 90th minute making it a comfortable win in the end for the Blues.
Connor Pace came closest for the Blues in the first half as his long-range effort whistled past the top left corner. Long Eaton were gathering momentum in this part of the game.
Boldmere were close to scoring a freak goal in the 29th minute. Lews King’s attempted pass to James Shaw was put to a stop when the ball hit a Boldmere attacker, the ball was thought by all in blue and black to have struck the arm of the forward. King made an impressive reactive save to keep the tie all square as the referee waved play-on.
The referee blew his whistle for half-time with the score at 0-0. That was about to change drastically.
James Shaw opened the scoring in the 49th minute. Evan Garnett made a smart run in behind the Boldmere defence and squared the ball to Shaw who only had to tap the ball into an empty net. The winger won’t score an easier goal.
Well, he kind of did that just two minutes later.
It was the same partnership that created the first goal, Garnett and Shaw linking up again. Just like the first, Garnett squared the ball to Shaw who converted into an empty net.
Evan Garnett had already assisted two and this time round it was time for him to get on the scoresheet. In the 67th minute, Liam Loughlan slipped the striker through who bet his man comfortably and found the bottom left corner with his finish.
James Shaw had his hat-trick a minute later in the 68th. Long Eaton were quick to win the ball back from kick-off after Garnett’s goal and Shaw finished the transition with a slotted finish past Brown. The Blues were 4-0 up.
James Taylor scored a fifth in the 90th minute. It was Loughlan again who provided the goal with some lovely work. He laid the ball off to Taylor who found the bottom left corner with ease.
What a second-half performance and win for the Blues.
Long Eaton will be looking to take this momentum created by this win into next Saturday’s trip to Loughborough Students in the league.
Come on You Blues!
