Jamal Adams scored the only goal of the first half to give the Diamonds a one goal advantage at the break.
However, Jamie Hanson and Garnett netted within four minutes of each other in the dying moments of the match to secure all three points for Long Eaton.
Brad Munn opted to make just one change to the starting xi that was victorious at the weekend – Owen Betts started in defence as Ryley D’Sena dropped to the bench.
It took until the 11th minute for either side to find the target – the first came through Jarvis Wilson whose low driven free kick had to be saved by the diving Lewis King.
Eight minutes later, the Blues had a free kick from a similar position down the opposite end of the pitch. Callum Cocks struck the free kick low towards Ben Heath’s near post, but it was a comfortable save for the shot stopper.
Then, in the 22nd minute, Adams opened the scoring for the Diamonds, after a looping corner dropped inside the Blues’ box and caused a mini scramble before the forward bundled the ball over the line.
Half chances fell for Garnett, James Taylor and James Shaw in the final moments of the first half, but neither United forward could find the target or trouble Heath, thus the Blues went in at the break a goal down.
However, just three minutes into the second half, it seemed as though United had found the equaliser. On the turn, Garnett struck low towards the far post from inside the box, but the forward could only connect with the post before the ball was cleared up pitch.
Adams had another opportunity for the visitors midway through the second half, as the striker aimed to let fire on goal from the edge of the area, although Cocks put in a superb block to deny the Diamonds a second goal.
With 25 minutes left to play, Garnett and Casey Johnson had two huge chances to give Long Eaton the lead. The Blues striker connected with Shaw’s cross, with an outstretched leg, but couldn’t apply enough power on the ball to trouble Heath.
Johnson then let fire with a snapshot half volley from the edge of the area moments later, although once again Heath was equal to the shot.
It was then Owen Betts’ turn to trouble Heath with a strike on goal, but this one came with 15 minutes left to play and forced the visitors’ keeper down low to maintain their lead.
Nevertheless, with two minutes left of normal time, that lead fell through in spectacular fashion. A deflected Blues cross fell perfectly onto the diving head of Hanson who found the top right corner of the goal with a superb effort.
Remarkably, in the second minute of added time, the Blues managed to finalise an incredible comeback and secure the win. United substitute Connor Pace struck the ball from the edge of the area and forced a parried save from Heath – that allowed Garnett to react quickest and prod him a rebound from close.
That turned out to be the last chance of the match and meant that the Blues were victorious on home soil and made it three league victories on the bounce.
