
Goals from Steve Holder and Ian Muir helped United progress in the competition but Heanor Town defeated them 4-3 in the next round in a game played at Grange Park.
In 1972 Brian Daykin (pictured) took charge of his first game for the club in a Midland League fixture against Alfreton Town following the departure of Player Manager Terry Thompson. United lost the game 4-2 but the new Manager gave debuts to ‘keeper Paul Boswell and Mark Bradley. Boswell had been drafted in due to an injury to John Mycroft and played his only game for the club.
At the end of the season United finished in 8th place in the Midland League, whilst Alfreton finished 4th
In the game played at Gainsborough Trinity in 1967 the attendance was noted as 1,125.
Andy Cowlishaw made his Long Eaton United debut in the drawn game at Melton Town in 1989 during a Central Midlands League game. He later went on to make 51 appearances (+ 2 as a substitute) and scored 16 goals for the club.
