Pre-season trialists Matt Baker and Danny Gordon have signed for Long Eaton United ahead of the 2020/2021 season.

Baker joins us having played in three of our pre-season fixtures, against Hucknall Town, Basford United and Heanor Town.

Whereas, Gordon played for 45 minutes against Basford and arrives at Grange Park after he left Belper Town last week.

First team manager Ian Deakin previously worked with Baker at Ilkeston Town, commenting on their reunion at Long Eaton United, Deakin said: “Matt has been out of football for a while and has showed in the pre-season games the quality that he possesses.

“He will be an asset to the squad moving forward as his fitness and match sharpness comes back."

Deakin is pleased with the capture of Gordon, given his track record of success over the last few seasons, Deakin added: "Danny Gordon brings a wealth of experience to the squad, he is a very good player technically and a great signing for us.

“I am delighted he has chosen Long Eaton United to play his football this season."

Gordon joins the Blues on the back of an FA Cup run with Belper Town which ended just before they reached the First Round Proper, following a 2-1 loss to Notts County at Meadow Lane.

However, despite the defeat, Gordon did manage to write himself into Belper Town folklore with his wonder-goal from outside the box, which flew straight into the top corner, to give the Nailers a surprise lead.

Baker previously represented the Robins for seven years before stints at Grantham Town, Buxton and Redditch United. The defender came through the ranks at Ilkeston’s academy and went on to captain the side in 2015.

Baker knows the Midland Football League well - he was a part of the Ilkeston team that won promotion from the Premier Division in the 2018/19 season, making 29 appearances and scoring four goals.
