Following our defeat to Sherwood Colliery on July 5, it was time for a home fixture.
The weather was awful, but luckily, the boys made up for it with five brilliant goals and some stylish football.
Brad Munn named his starting 11 and seven subs.
Lewis King started in the net with the captain’s armband.
Ryan Campbell-Gordon and Owen Betts occupied their usual posts at full-back.
Gianluca Bucci was partnered alongside Hanson at the back.
A midfield three consisted of James Taylor, Connor Pace, and Thompson Matthews.
Garnett took up his central attacking role with Walters to his left and Player A to his right.
The bench was filled with Caleb Horsley, Player B, Player C, Corey Gregory, Brad Munn, Oscar Hugenholtz, and Aaron Cole.
The game began quickly for the visitors as they found the net within three minutes after a nice ball was played in behind our defense and the Forest striker slotted it into the bottom right corner.
Their lead was doubled after King was tackled inside his box. This meant the striker had an open goal to walk it into.
However, what looked like a cricket score forming turned out to be a test for our boys, and they passed as they picked themselves back up and got back into the game.
Our first goal came in the 16th minute as Thompson Matthews controlled the ball on the edge of the box and guided it beautifully into the top right corner. The keeper made a great effort to save it, but it was too perfectly placed for him to save.
That goal gave the boys confidence to play football and keep possession as Forest had very little chances on our goal from then on.
Walters, having struggled last season for goals and assists, decided to let loose in the 40th minute with a thumping strike off the crossbar. A corner was whipped in and only cleared as far as Dex on the edge of the box. He brought it down and then struck it so beautifully it hit the crossbar and bounced in. Unreal.
Just four minutes later, we had completed the turnaround.
A corner in from Walters saw Hanson jump the highest at the front post and direct a header towards the far side of the goal. The ball went up and over the goalkeeper and made the Family Only Stadium erupt.
The second half started a lot quieter than the first with both sides having chances going wide.
It was not until the 63rd minute, magic happened. Bucci and Hanson standing over the free kick almost perfectly centre of the box and just a few yards away from the goal. Hanson steps up and hits it into the top right corner! He made it look so effortless.
By the 70th minute, all of our subs bar Munn and Cole had entered the pitch.
Our final goal of the night came in the 75th minute with Garnett doing what he does best. A corner in was flicked to the back post, where Bucci was waiting, he headered it back towards goal and gave Garnett the opportunity to flick it into the goal.
Our next match is against Gedling Miners away from home on July 19.
