Long Eaton United Ladies marched into the next round of the FA Womens Cup

Long Eaton United Ladies 7-1 The New Saints
Womens FA Cup, Round 2 Qualifying
Sunday 23 September 2018

Long Eaton United Ladies marched into the next round of the Womens FA Cup with a stunning performance that laid the “bogey club” tag well and truly to rest.

The Blues hadn’t beaten TNS in four previous encounters – three defeats and a solitary draw being the dismal record, but Long Eaton looked determined to settle that score right from the off as they came flying out of the blocks. With barely four minutes played, Jade Arber beat her marker to the ball, drove into the penalty area and hit a low shot past Stacey Garnham in the TNS goal. It was the start of a long afternoon for the New Saints net-minder, and it got worse just three minutes later. Ashleigh Evans found herself in a one-on-one with the keeper and kept her cool to round her opponent and side-foot the ball home. Jade Arber then sent a shot crashing against the bar, before TNS took the ball upfield and in a melee in the Blues penalty area the ball ended up in the net off the unfortunate Millie Fugler. At this point there were only eleven minutes played – a breathtaking start!

The goal seemed to rally the visitors who had a spell of possession without really threatening Jamie Kingham’s goal. However, Long Eaton increased their lead on 28 minutes as Lucie Johnstone delivered a lovely cross into the area and in the scramble Ash Evans nodded in her second of the day. Five minutes later and Amy Pashley unleashed a “Pash Special” from outside the area that flew into the net. 4-1 at the break.

The second half was equally exciting. Jade Arber was unlucky with a lob over the keeper that fell just wide, whilst Jodie Bragan missed the visitors best chance by shooting high and wide. On the hour it was 5-1 as a corner fell to Jade Arber who found herself with space in the penalty area and took the chance by slotting home.

John Bennett made some changes just after the hour mark, bringing on Laura Sears and Anya-Mae Cresswell. On 67 minutes it was Lucie Johnstone who found the ball at her feet in the penalty area and wellied the ball home from close range to make it 6-1. TNS had a rare chance after 69 minutes but the shot was saved by Jamie Kingham. Shannon Parkes then joined the fray as the final Blues substitution.

Laura Sears was inches away from converting a cross from Jade Arber before Nicola Smyth rounded off the scoring on 78 minutes as she turned her defender to poke the ball home.

Wonderful performance. Great result.
