Match Preview – Leamington (H)

The Blues welcome Warwickshire based Leamington to Grange Park this Tuesday as we look for successive league points.

In United’s previous match they managed to snatch a point off Coalville Town away from home after a stoppage time equaliser.

The MCS Stadium played host to this fixture on Saturday afternoon, and after a quiet first half, it took until the 79th minute for the scoring to open.

Coalville’s substitute Terrell Pennant scored a fantastic solo goal to give the Ravens a deserved lead with just over 10 minutes left to play.

However, in stoppage time, it was the Blues’ Nathan Tyson that flicked a long throw towards goal and secured an equaliser for United to clinch a point in Leicestershire.

The Opposition –

Leamington currently sit in sixth place after 30 games played in the Southern Football League Premier Central this season – with 14 victories, 10 draws and six defeats to their name.

The Brakes’ Callum Stewart sits 11th in the list of top goal-scorers in the league so far this season. The forward has netted 12 times, just 4 shy of the top spot held by St. Ives’ Jonathan Edwards.

Our visitors have not actually appeared in a league fixture since Saturday 24th February, due to their arranged fixture at the weekend versus Stourbridge being postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Thus, in their last outing, they fell to a 1-0 home defeat at the hands of Needham Market – Jamie McGrath’s second half goal was enough to secure all three points for the league leaders.

Leamington will of course be looking to return to winning ways when they travel to Grange Park on Tuesday evening.

Previous Meeting’s –

The last time that the Blues and the Brakes met was in the reverse league fixture away from home at the start of the season, where the Brakes were 2-1 victors.

Jack Lane gave the hosts an early lead, but the Blues were quick to respond early in the second half through a diving Cameren Philip header.

United held out until the 91st minute, but Henry Landers broke the hearts of a very mixed Long Eaton squad with a stoppage time winner to kickstart Leamington’s season.

Prior to that match, both Long Eaton and Leamington hadn’t competed in the same league since the 1970/71 season. Previously known as Lockheed Leamington, that season was their final in the Midland League, before being promoted to the Southern League and competing thereafter.

The two sides actually competed in the Midland League from 1963 to 1971 and they would have faced eachother at least 16 times during that period – 50+ years later and the two sides are back competing against eachother in the Southern Football League.

Manager’s Quotes –

Looking ahead to the Leamington game in midweek, Blues’ boss Brad Munn said: “As a club, they have expected to be where they are now, if not higher in terms of league position – they have rose to the occasion and are of course going to be at it when we face them on Tuesday night.

“They are going to expect three points, let’s not shy away from that, anyone else on that table expects them to as well, the only team that doesn’t expect them to win is us.

“For us, it is good to see where they are at as a team in person this season, rather than watching videos and getting reports, so it is good to match them up again and see where we are against them.

“We are going to go out and get as positive a result out of that as possible, aiming for nothing less than three points.”
