Lincoln City loanee Worsfold-Gregg brought the game level in the final action of the first half but, shortly after the restart, Jaanai Gordon restored the hosts lead.

Despite a period of late pressure from United, Alvechurch picked up their second win on the bounce and a first win in charge for Fry, while Long Eaton went a fourth match without a win.

Lewis McGugan and Brad Munn made two changes to Monday’s starting XI as Nathan Tyson and Joseph Nyahwema returned to the lineup with Micah Jebbison dropped to the bench and Ryley Reynolds suspended.

The Blues started on the front foot and pressured the hosts into a couple of mistakes at the back, although they could not capitalise on them.

Nathan Tyson came closest to scoring but slipped as his effort from the edge of the area deflected wide off of centre-half Abel Alabi.

Effectively kicking downhill on the sloped surface of Lye Meadow, the hosts soon found their stride and hit back on the counterattack. Fullback Joshua Dugmore broke through down the right and drilled the ball across for Jaanai Gordon to run onto and strike but the effort flew over the bar. A good chance poorly taken by the Church forward.

On the other flank, fellow fullback Ammar Dyer surged forward and saw an opportunity to shoot from distance – the defender’s shot rattled the underside of the bar and somehow stayed out.

Church were on the scent of a goal and pushed on, they forced The Blues to sit deep as Jack Concannon, Gordon and Alabi lined up to shoot but their respective efforts were blocked by Zayn Hakeem and Riece Bertram.

Firmly in control of the match, Cassidy put the hosts ahead in the 37th minute with his second goal in as many games.

Although, deep into first-half injury time, Worsfold-Gregg equalised. The midfielder’s in-swinging cross dropped awkwardly onto goalkeeper Dale Eve who backpedaled, collided with the post and fumbled the ball over the line to provide us with a timely equaliser.

Shortly after the restart Dyer dribbled down the left and found the run of Gordon who slotted the ball past Ben Whiting and restored the hosts lead.

With the game level for just three minutes the hosts almost doubled their lead, this time Gordon was denied his brace from close-range by the woodwork.

Nyahwema looked dangerous down the left and cut into the box before his shot was blocked by Alabi, the tricky winger gathered the rebound and attempted another shot which Eve saved comfortably at his near post.

Whiting prevented what looked like a certain goal from Gordon with a superb save, the opposition striker turned and shot from distance but Whiting got a hand to the dipping and swerving strike.

Attacking-minded substitutions from The Blues’ bench provided a boost in the final minutes. Second-half substitute Lucien Mahovo almost hit the target as his free kick beat the wall but deflected wide.

James Spruce had a chance from close-range blocked by Ethan Patterson who retained possession after he prevented the shot.

Nathan Whitehead advanced forward with seconds left on the clock and showcased some neat footwork before he took the shot on from distance, although it was struck well, it was no trouble for Eve.
