It was another 3 points in the bag this week for the ladies when they beat league strugglers Asfordby 3-1, not a pretty game but an important result all the same.
The ladies travelled to bottom of the league Asfordby hoping to repeat last weeks efforts where they beat Raunds Town 5 nil however from the kick off it was clear that the home side were not going to make it easy for the Blues.
Long Eaton found space down the wings but couldn’t capitalise and the Leicestershire side were always a threat.
Then against the run of play Long Eaton were caught napping which let through a Asfordby striker who poked home from close range.
It was the worst possible start for the Blues but jolted them to a fightback and after battling, Hayley Armstrong latched onto a through ball from Lindsey Strange to put her shot beyond the grasp of the Asfordby keeper to level the scores.
It was clear this Asfordby team was a lot different from the one off last season and Long Eaton needed to up their game. However when the break came it was still all-square.
With promotion at stake the Blues set about rectifying their first half mistakes and attacked the Asfordby back line. Frustrations grew however as they could not make the pressure pay off.
As time wore on it wasn’t looking good for the Blues but then Kimi Harford picked up the ball outside the 18 yard area and curled a perfect shot into the top left of the goal, nothing the Asfordby stopper could have done, much to the relief of Long Eaton.
All credit due the Leicester side did not sit back and accept defeat they kept threatening the Blues defence and came particularly close with a free kick just skimming over the bar.
Trying to ease the pressure, Long Eaton hassled Asfrodby and won possession in their half and when the ball fell to Jodie Hancock she didn’t think twice about hitting one straight into the back of the net, a well earned goal for the hard working centre forward and a 2 goal cushion for the Blues.
It was definitely relief all round when the ref blew for 90 minutes, Long Eaton 3-1 winners.
The Blues result takes them to third in the league, leapfrogging Huncote who dropped points against Oadby.
Next week the Blues are at home to mid table Barrowby where another 3 points is essential to keep the heat on league leaders Hinckley.
